Growing the cevoTeam, new R&D collaborations, and a highly profitable webinar

Dear friends of Fiber Patch Placement,

Some things that used to be quite normal pre-COVID are now worth a special mentioning: Beginning of September, our commercial team attended the first in-person event since end of 2019! The International Composites Summit (ICS) in London, UK, was a great success and proved the point that, despite big advancements in online communication, in-person meetings are core to human interaction.

As we speak about human interactions: We welcomed two new colleagues to our growing cevoTeam: Dr. Florian Lenz joined as Technical Director, and Henriette Morgenstern as Technical Marketing & Business Development Manager. They are looking forward to meeting you at one of our next events!

We also proudly present MAI ACoSaLUS. In this R&D project, supported by the Bavarian aerospace funding program and under the lead of GKN Aerospace, we advance the lay-up automation for multi-material sandwich structures, including the automated lay-up of honeycomb cores.

Company news

New colleagues in the cevoTeam
Beginning of September, our new Technical Director Dr. Florian Lenz started at Cevotec. As mechanical engineer with a doctorate from the TU Dresden in the field of lightweight construction and plastics technology, he remained loyal to the composites industry during his work at both LZS GmbH and NEMOS GmbH. Florian’s belief in FPP technology and the strong drive of our team finally brought him to Cevotec. In his new role, he will focus on coordinating the development of the FPP technology as well as its applications areas.

At the same time, our commercial team got a new member: Henriette Morgenstern started as Technical Marketing & Business Development Manager. After a change of industry, she returns with Cevotec to the field of lightweight engineering, which she already focused on during her studies of industrial engineering at the TU Dresden. With sporting spirit and verve, she is now looking forward to advancing Cevotec’s marketing activities and identifying new applications for FPP.

Applications

R&D collaboration MAI ACoSaLUS – Automated Composite Sandwich Lay-Up System

Together with GKN Aerospace Deutschland GmbH, TUM – Chair of Carbon Composites, SGL Technologies GmbH, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, and under the co-founding authority of Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, we started a pioneering R&D project targeting the full automation of sandwich structure production.

As of today, sandwich structures, known as an excellent means in building lighter and thus emissions-reducing aircrafts, still depend on manual material lay-up and subsequent inspection steps. We plan to further enhance the FPP process by e.g. enhanced on-line inspection steps and self-adaptive process control, advanced placement routines, and automated core handling. The project team aims to improve the net lay-up speed of relevant components by factor 7-10x.

Webinar: H2 tank reinforcements with FPP
As you might remember from our last newsletter, Cevotec has developed an industrial solution that improves the material efficiency of composite tanks significantly. The weight of pressure vessels can be reduced by 15% while achieving equivalent mechanical properties. This is particularly important for the strongly growing hydrogen economy, which is key to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. We received a lot of interest in our case study and presentation as well as in our video footage from our demonstrator production.

To further explore the topic, we would like to invite you to our webinar “H2 tank reinforcements with FPP Technology“ which takes place Thursday, November 25, at 2pm CET. Our CEO and Co-founder Thorsten Groene will speak live on our industrial reinforcement solution and explain how FPP can replace the high-angle helical layers (HAHL) in a typical filament winding process. This shortens production time by 20%, decreases weight by 15% and improves storage efficiency by 10%.

In a series production setting, the investment in FPP technology amortizes already in the first year of production!

We got pretty well used to participating in digital events. But now, after this long time of virtual meetings, we attended an in-person event again: The International Composites Summit in London (UK) beginning of September. For Cevotec, this event was a success: FPP received a lot of interest among visitors and we had many exciting discussion. In special focus: our pressure vessel reinforcement solution, which we also presented on the conference stage.
