Baumann Automation and Cevotec closed Collaboration

Baumann Automation and Cevotec closed Collaboration

(Munich/Amberg, September 2016) – Cevotec and Baumann Automation, located in Amberg, closed a collaboration for the assembly of Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) production systems. An important next milestone is the release of the first FPP system in March 2017, when it will be launched to market at the JEC World composite trade show in Paris. The industrialization of the FPP technology allows manufacturers to produce complex 3D fiber laminates in high quality and quantity.

The use of robotics to facilitate automation and the process integration required for this are among Baumann’s core strengths. Baumann automation systems represent the ideal combination of standard modules and customized applications, and offer the perfect solutions for industrial production.

The production system that the two companies jointly build up is the first fully automated production system for a scalable serial production of high-quality, complex CFRP products. Direct 3D preforming in net-shape eliminates additional forming processes. Through the additive manufacturing process the system only places fibers where needed, enabling varying thickness part laminates easily throughout the part. This reduces material input compared to traditional processes by up to 30%, and material scrap by more than 50%. Fiber Patch Placement enables a new dimension of freedom in load-path oriented laminate design that leads to an increase of mechanical properties like strength and stiffness of parts by to up 150%.

About Cevotec

Founded 2015 in Munich, Cevotec offers the first production technology for carbon composites that works with patch laminates and empowers manufacturers to build complex parts in high volumes. The company develops and sells production systems, composite design software and offers development services for prototypes and serial products. Cevotec is a spin-off from the Institute for Carbon Composites of Technische Universtität München and is supported, among others, by the European Space Agency ESA and the EXIST research transfer program.
