Students of TU Dresden visit Cevotec

Matching exceptional high-tech companies with talented engineering students – that’s the mission of the annual field trip of the Institute of “Institute for Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology” at the Technical University of Dresden. This time, in addition to industry giants such as SGL or BMW, also the Fiber Patch Placement specialist Cevotec was on the students’ itinerary.

Every year, the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology of Technical University of Dresden offers students in the final phase of their engineering studies the opportunity to gain a direct insight into the activities of companies in the composites industry. Conversely, the companies visited have a unique opportunity to directly address future interns, diploma students and employees.

“Such a personal and purposeful exchange with highly qualified talent is particularly important for a highly specialized company like ours,” reports Dr. Neven Majic, EVP of Cevotec, who guided the approximately thirty students during their visit at Cevotec. “As a true Composites 4.0 technology, Fiber Patch Placement has the potential to revolutionize the entire CFRP industry. In order to drive development forward at full speed, it’s a blessing to meet the skilled engineers of tomorrow today and get them excited about us and our technology.”

After a detailed introduction to Fiber Patch Placement technology and the importance of additive manufacturing for the production of complex fiber composite components, Dr. Majic and his team presented the CAE platform ARTIST STUDIO. “Powerful and specific software is essential for digital product development,” explains Dr. Majic. “Our software with a CAD and a CAM module as well as a plug-in for FE software enables digital laminate production, simulation of the laminate and offline programming of the production robots.”

The students subsequently followed a live demonstration of the SAMBA production system by Felix Michl, Cevotec’s CTO. “You don’t have the opportunity to watch robots’ dance’ every day,” comments Tobias Lebelt, M.Eng. Research Associate Thermoplastic Processes and head of the excursion. The intensive round of questions, resulting from the demonstration, clearly showed that the excursion was a success. “The students’ expertise and interest exceeded by far our expectations,” comments Dr. Majic. “For us, the visit was a real pleasure.” And Tobias Lebelt confirms: “During this visit we have gained lots of interesting insights.” Very likely that the one or the other student will pick-up a first job in Taufkirchen…
